How Do Tank Water Heaters and Tankless Water Heaters Differ?

Choosing between a new conventional water heater or a tankless water heater when you need to replace your existing system? If you’re unfamiliar with the differences, Mr. Plumber can help you!

A conventional hot water heater heats a tank of hot water ahead of time. Tank size is an important consideration for both electric water heaters and natural gas water heaters, so make sure it’s sufficient enough to hold as much water as you’ll need during the highest-demand period. What happens if you run out of hot water? You’ll be stuck waiting 10-15 minutes for your water heater to turn those icicles back into hot water.

Meanwhile, tankless units don’t need storage tanks because they don’t store heated water; instead, they produce it instantly on demand when needed using the gas burner and an electric heating element. Because hot water is produced on demand, there’s no waiting around for the hot water supply to refill. However, you must choose the proper flow rate when you buy a new tankless unit, as this will determine how much water heats at one time. Make sure the flow rate is sufficient for all hot water activities that can be conducted at the same time in the home.

Average Lifespan of Water Heaters

When it comes to heating water in Indianapolis area homes, one of the most common appliances used is tankless heaters. Tankless units are generally more energy efficient and last longer than their counterparts, the tank-style water heater. If you have a tankless water heater, expect an average lifespan of around 20 to 30 years.

If your existing water heater is a conventional water heater model, likely, you won’t likely receive as many years of service from this appliance as you would from its tankless cousin. Expect to replace a water heater tank model every 8 to 12 years instead.

Signs You Need to Replace a Water Heater

Age is an important consideration when deciding whether or not to replace your water heater. But there are also other reasons why you might want to consider getting a new one:

  • If you’ve had trouble with the performance of your water heater, even though it was running well at first.
  • If the sediment in your tank is making it difficult to maintain the water temperature setting.
  • If you find that your annual energy bill has gone up for no discernible reason.
  • If you want energy-efficient models with safety device features like an automatic shutoff valve or power venting.
  • The pilot light repeatedly goes out.
  • The hot water lines and cold water lines don’t differ much in temperature.
  • The water heater’s vent pipe allows combustion air and exhaust to leak out.

Equipment Decisions When Replacing a Water Heater

To make an informed decision regarding your new hot water heater, it is important to consider the factors involved and then weigh them against each other.

  • Do you want something smaller? If so, then tankless models might be ideal for you as they take up less space than conventional tank-style heaters (which could also prove advantageous if space is at a premium in your household).

  • Will one type of water heater work with your existing electrical wiring and fuel type? If your home doesn’t have gas piping, this may mean you choose an electric water heater unit versus a natural gas unit. Even if your home does not have a gas line currently installed, it may be possible to add gas lines and a gas control valve so that you can use a gas water heater for heating water. Adding a gas line can protect you from fluctuations in electrical fuel prices.

  • Tankless water heating units typically consume less energy than conventional tanks because they don’t have to heat water all day long like an electric or gas water heater with a tank.

  • The costs of replacing an existing water heater with another tank model are relatively affordable compared to replacing it with a tankless model. However, this investment in water heaters that are tankless can save you lots of money over time since you’ll need much less energy for water heating needs in total, including water through plumbing fixtures, dishwashers, and clothes washers – not just hot showers!

Water Heater Replacement Costs

We know you’re probably curious about what kinds of water heater installation fees are included in water heater replacement costs. Does replacing a water heater tank unit with a tankless water heater cost more than a water heater installation with another tank water heater? Is it more expensive to replace a water heater before it breaks down, or should you wait until it completely fails before spending money on a new water heater?

There are many different types of water heater costs that can affect your final prices when getting a new hot water heater installed. Tankless water heater costs are generally higher than conventional model prices, as these water heaters are more energy efficient and require more complex installation expertise, increasing labor costs. An electric model of either water heater type is generally more affordable than natural gas units. According to average costs, you may pay around a thousand dollars for the most basic, minimal energy-efficient performance tank water heater model installation or several thousand for high energy-efficiency tankless models.
